Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama prayed for world peace here on Tuesday.

Hundreds of Buddhists and followers of the Dalai Lama converged at the Kaal Chakra Maidan (Wheel of Time Ground) in Bodh Gaya, the place where Buddha attained enlightenment, as the five-day-long ‘Geluk Monlam puja (prayers)’ began.

“He (Dalai Lama) has given a lot of practical advise on being nice to the people and being transparent to yourself in your life so that you don’t have to hide things from people because you’ll have better relations with them and being open to them you’ll have more friends,” said James, a devotee from London.

Around 50,000 people from across the world are expected to assemble in Bodh Gaya over the five days to hear the Dalai Lama’s discourses.uring his stay the Dalai Lama would inaugurate a multimedia museum and visit new stone carvings on Buddha’s life erected in the Mahabodhi Mahavihara premises.

The 1,500-year-old holiest Buddhist shrine Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya is where the Buddha attained enlightenment 2,550 years ago.

NAGANO, Japan, Dec. 30 (AP) – (Kyodo)—Tibet’s spiritual leader the Dalai Lama will visit Zenkoji Temple in central Japan, which earned praise from him for rejecting cooperation in a Beijing Olympic torch relay, in June 2010, the temple said Wednesday.

The Buddhist temple in Nagano declined to serve as the starting point of the Japan leg of the torch relay because of the crackdown on Buddhists in Tibet in 2008, and the Dalai Lama gave a statue to the temple in March to show his gratitude over the decision. Both sides have since maintained exchanges.

“Zenkoji Temple’s decision to withdraw from the relay led Tibetans to think that they have received strong support from the Japanese Buddhist community,” said Lhakpa Tshoko, the representative of the Dalai Lama’s liaison office for Japan and East Asia.

The Dalai Lama will arrive in Japan on June 18, attend a ritual at the temple the following day and deliver a speech in Nagano on June 20 before visiting Tokyo and Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, according to the temple.

Dharamsala, Dec 28: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama Monday urged the Chinese government to release writer Liu Xiaobo and other political prisoners.

“I am saddened by the Chinese government sentencing Liu Xiaobo, a well-known Chinese writer, to an 11-year jail term,” the Dalai Lama said, according to a statement.

“By forcefully sentencing Liu Xiaobo, and others like him, who use freedom of expression to publicly articulate their opinions, the Chinese authorities have not only violated the binding principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but also the freedom of expression mentioned in the constitution of the People’s Republic of China.

“I urge the Chinese government to release as soon as possible Liu Xiaobo and other political prisoners who were jailed because of exercising freedom of expression,” he said.

The Dalai Lama, along with many of his supporters, fled Tibet and took refuge in this Himachal Pradesh hill town in 1959. His government-in-exile is not recognised by any country in the world.

Sponsors and a Tokyo museum hosting a Tibetan Buddhist exhibition have come under heated criticism from pro-Tibet activists who say the display is politically biased because of the lack of reference to historical facts about the region.

Pro-Tibet supporters have rallied near the Ueno Royal Museum every weekend since the exhibition, titled “Tibet: Treasures from the Roof of the World,” opened Sept. 19 with China’s State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Chinese Embassy listed among its official sponsors.

The activists have also delivered speeches with commentaries on the history of Tibet and issues related to the region.

Victorian Premier John Brumby, it seems, is too busy to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

The latter addressed Victorian politicians at a reception at parliament house on Wednesday, but Brumby was noticeably absent, reports The Australian.

The Dalai Lama spoke to over 100 people on Wednesday in a private address organised by the informal group, Victorian MPs for Tibet.

In a speech that lasted more than 30 minutes, the Dalai Lama promoted peace, harmony and secularism and urged Australian MPs to visit Tibet to test Chinese claims about Buddhist practices.

It was the Tibetan leader’s only address at an Australian parliament during this visit. He spoke in a committee room and did not address the chamber.

Afterwards he was introduced to Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu, saying he always sides with the “minority”, to which Mr Baillieu replied: “We are the strongest but we are the minority”

Brumby joins Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in declining to meet with the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai later told the media he was not fazed.

“No, no. No concern,” he said, adding “My visit (is) non political.”

Mr Brumby was in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs announcing the redevelopment of the Box Hill hospital during the Dalai’s address.

He blamed a clash of schedules for not meeting with His Holiness and said it had nothing to do with damaging relations with China.
